What Is a Vort?

A Vort (Yiddish for "word") is the traditional Jewish engagement celebration. At the Vort, the couple formally announces their engagement, and the families come together to celebrate. The name comes from the custom of giving a word of Torah or a verbal commitment at the gathering. In many communities, a Shtar Tenoyim (engagement contract) is read, and a plate is broken to symbolize the commitment — similar to the glass broken under the chuppah.

The Vort is typically a smaller, more intimate gathering than the wedding — often held at the home of the bride or groom's family, with close family and friends. Some communities call this a L'Chaim or a Tish. It is a joyful, meaningful occasion that marks the beginning of the wedding journey.

Vort vs. Tenoyim — What's the Difference?

The terms Vort and Tenoyim are sometimes used interchangeably, but there is a distinction. A Vort is the broader engagement celebration — the gathering where the engagement is announced. Tenoyim (or Tenaim) refers specifically to the formal reading of the engagement conditions. In many communities, the Tenoyim is read at the Vort itself. Some families hold a separate Tenoyim ceremony closer to the wedding.

If you are planning a formal Tenoyim ceremony, see our Tenoyim Invitations page for dedicated designs and wording. For a general engagement celebration, our Vort invitation collection is perfect.

How to Invite to a Vort

Since a Vort is often planned quickly — sometimes within days of the engagement — Bal Simcha's instant invitation system is ideal. Choose a design, enter the couple's names, date, time, and location, and share instantly via WhatsApp. No waiting, no printing delays. For a more formal Vort, we also offer printed invitations.

Keep the wording warm and personal. A Vort is an intimate, joyful gathering — your invitation should reflect that. Mention the couple's names, the date and time, and the location. If it is a L'Chaim, you can say so. If food will be served, mention it.
