What Is a Shalom Zachar / Zucher?

A Shalom Zachar (also called a Zucher) is the traditional Ashkenazi gathering held on the Friday night (Shabbos) after the birth of a baby boy. The name Shalom Zachar means welcoming the male, and the gathering is a celebration of the new arrival. Friends and family come to the home of the newborn to celebrate, eat, drink, and sing. The gathering is typically informal — snacks, beer, whiskey, and cake — and is held on the first Shabbos after the birth.

The Shalom Zachar is separate from the Bris (which is held on the eighth day) and the Vachnacht (the night before the Bris). It is the first celebration of the birth, held on the very first Shabbos. Since the birth is often unexpected, the Shalom Zachar is usually planned on very short notice — sometimes the same day.

What to Include on a Shalom Zachar Invitation

A Shalom Zachar invitation should be short and simple — the baby's name (or just our baby boy), the date (the Shabbos), the time (typically after the meal, in the evening), and the location (the family home). Since the gathering is informal, the wording should be warm and casual. Mention that it is a Shalom Zachar or Zucher so guests know what to expect.

Because the Shalom Zachar is often planned the same day, Bal Simcha's instant invitation system is perfect. Customize a card in minutes and share it on WhatsApp right away.

Shalom Zachar vs. Vachnacht vs. Bris

Shalom Zachar / Zucher: The Friday night (Shabbos) after the birth. An informal gathering at the family home.

Vachnacht: The night before the Bris. A gathering focused on Torah study and celebration.

Bris / Brit Milah: The circumcision ceremony on the eighth day.

If you are planning a Vachnacht, see our Vachnacht Invitations page. For the Bris itself, see our Bris Invitations page. Many families send a combo card covering the Shalom Zachar, Vachnacht, and Bris.

A Shalom Zachar (Zucher) is the traditional Ashkenazi Friday night gathering held after the birth of a baby boy. Friends and family come to the home to celebrate the new arrival with food, drink, and song.
Is a Shalom Zachar the same as a Bris?

What is the difference between a Zucher and a Vachnacht?
A Zucher (Shalom Zachar) is the Friday night after the birth. A Vachnacht is the night before the Bris. Both are gatherings, but at different times.
