The Vachnacht (also spelled Wachnacht) is a traditional Ashkenazi Jewish custom observed the night before a Bris (Brit Milah). The name comes from the Yiddish words vach (watch or guard) and nacht (night) — literally the watch night. On the night before the Bris, family and friends gather at the home of the newborn to learn Torah, sing, and stay up (or at least gather in the evening) to guard the baby. It is a beautiful tradition rooted in the belief that Torah study and communal support protect the child on the eve of this important ceremony.
The Vachnacht is typically held the night before the Bris — which is usually on a Wednesday or Thursday, so the Vachnacht is typically on a Tuesday or Wednesday night. The gathering is informal: family and friends come to the home, there is some learning, singing, and food, and the community shows its support for the family and the baby.
A Vachnacht invitation should include the baby's name (if given) or just our baby boy, the date and time of the Vachnacht gathering, and the location (usually the family home). If the Vachnacht is combined with the Bris the next morning, mention both. Many families send a combo card covering both the Vachnacht and the Bris. The wording should be warm and simple.
Since the Bris is on the eighth day from birth, the Vachnacht is often planned on short notice. Bal Simcha's instant invitation system is perfect — customize a card in minutes and share it on WhatsApp right away.
Many families send one invitation that covers both the Vachnacht (evening) and the Bris (next morning). Bal Simcha has beautiful combo cards for exactly this — so you only need one invitation for the whole celebration. The combo card typically lists the Vachnacht time and the Bris time on the same card.
If you prefer separate cards, we have standalone Vachnacht invitations and standalone Bris invitations as well. On Bal Simcha, every word is customizable.
