What Is a Siyum?
A Siyum (meaning completion) is the celebration held when a person finishes studying a significant portion of Torah — most commonly a masechta (tractate) of the Talmud, a sefer (book) of the Chumash, a seder of Mishnayos, or the entire Shas. The Siyum is a joyous occasion marked by a special meal (seudas mitzvah), the recitation of the Hadran (the concluding prayer), and often a dvar Torah from the person who completed the study.
Siyumim are held for many reasons: a Bar Mitzvah boy completing a masechta, a yeshiva finishing a seder, a community completing a sefer, or an individual finishing a personal study goal. A Siyum is also held on the yahrzeit of a parent (as a form of iluy neshama), on the eve of Pesach (the fast of the firstborn is permitted at a Siyum), and at the dedication of a new sefer Torah.
Types of Siyum Invitations
Siyum Hasefer: Celebrating the completion of an entire sefer — often a sefer Torah, a Chumash, or a major work. This is a significant milestone, often marked by a large gathering and a festive meal.
Siyum Mishnayos: Celebrating the completion of a seder of Mishnayos or the entire Shishah Sidrei Mishnah. Common for Bar Mitzvah boys, yeshiva students, and community study groups.
Siyum on a Masechta: Celebrating the completion of a single masechta of the Talmud. This is the most common type of Siyum, held in yeshivas, at siyum bechorim on Erev Pesach, and for personal study milestones.
What to Include on a Siyum Invitation
A Siyum invitation should mention the occasion (Siyum on Maseches X, Siyum Mishnayos, Siyum Hasefer), the name of the person completing the study (if applicable), the date and time, and the location. If there will be a meal, mention it. If the Siyum is in memory of a loved one, you can include that as well. In traditional communities, including the Hebrew date is a nice touch.
On Bal Simcha, every word is customizable. Choose from our Siyum invitation templates and tailor the wording to your exact occasion.
